Mahjong Scoring System – How Points Are Calculated
Mahjong uses a variety of scoring methods, but the general principle remains the same: the more complex your hand, the higher your score. Here’s a breakdown of how points are awarded:
Basic Scoring Rules
- Standard Win: A basic winning hand earns 10 points.
- Pong of Dragons or Winds: Forming a Pong (three matching tiles) of dragon or wind tiles grants 10-20 points, depending on the set.
- Pure Suit Combination: A hand consisting entirely of tiles from the same suit (e.g., all bamboo or all circles) is worth 40-80 points.
- Secret Hands: Special hands, such as those made entirely of Pongs, carry a high value of 50 points or more.
- Self-Drawn Victory: If you draw your winning tile yourself rather than claiming a discard, your total score is doubled (2x multiplier).
Winning & Score Distribution When a player declares “Mahjong,” the other players must either pay points based on the game’s rules or follow the betting structure in place. While scoring methods may differ slightly across Mahjong variants, the core concept remains unchanged: the player with the strongest hand or the first to complete a valid combination wins the game!
Mastering the scoring system is key to improving your strategy and maximizing your winnings—so keep playing, refining your skills, and climbing the leaderboard!
